Driving to the airport and sorting out the car while you are away

Driving to the airport and leaving the car behind for a trip is quite different from a normal journey. The car will sit unused for days or weeks, and you will return tired, probably late, and wanting to go straight home. A little preparation makes both ends of the trip smoother. It also saves you from a nasty surprise when you come back. Here is a simple checklist to follow.

Before you leave, tidy the car properly. Remove all rubbish, crumbs and forgotten food, because a warm car with old sandwiches soon smells terrible. Take out anything of value, and do not leave bags or devices on show. Check that you have enough fuel or charge for the return, so that you are not stranded when you get back. Give the car a quick look over, and make sure it is in reasonable condition before it sits for a while.

Finding it again

When you leave the car, take a moment to remember where you left it. Photograph the area, including any signs or numbers, and write down the details on a note or in your phone. Keep the key somewhere safe and easy to find in your hand luggage, not in a bag that goes in the hold. Check what applies where you leave the car.

Think about the journey there. Leave in good time, so that a delay does not spoil the day. Keep the passports and tickets in one easy place, and pack a small bag with snacks and drinks for the children. Decide who will handle what, whether it is the luggage, the keys or the children. A calm start to the trip sets the tone for the whole holiday.

Plan the return as well. When you come home tired, you do not want to hunt for the car or empty a cluttered boot. Pack a small bag of snacks and a warm jacket for the drive home, and leave a bottle of water in the car. If you will be away for a long time, ask a neighbour to check on it once or twice. When you are back at the car, take a moment before driving off, since tiredness after a journey can catch up with you.
