Most cars carry a spare wheel and a few odds and ends, but few have a small box of everyday helpers. A modest box in the boot can save a whole afternoon, particularly on a long holiday journey. It does not need to be expensive or complicated, just thoughtful. The idea is to have the small things ready, so that little problems stay little. Here is what tends to be most useful.
Start with the basics: wet wipes, tissues, a roll of bin bags and a few carrier bags. Add a torch, a spare phone charger, a small towel and a lightweight blanket. A pen and a notepad are surprisingly handy, as are a roll of tape and a few cable ties. Include a bottle of water and a packet of plain biscuits for emergencies. For children, add a few colouring pens and a small book.
Keeping the box useful
Choose a sturdy box with a lid, and give it a fixed place in the boot, where it will not slide about. Put the heavier things at the bottom and keep light items on top. Label the box clearly, so that anyone in the family can find it. Store it away from direct sun, because heat can spoil tape and wipes. A tidy box is far easier to use than a jumble.
Check the contents before every long trip. Replace what you have used, throw away what has dried out and add anything the season demands. In summer this might mean sun cream and a hat, and in colder months a scraper and warm gloves. Keep a few sick bags, since even good travellers feel queasy now and then. Some places expect certain items in the car, so check what applies where you drive.
Do not turn the box into a second boot. If it grows too large, you will stop checking it, and it will fill with things that you never use. Aim for a small collection that you would be glad of on a bad day. Tell the whole family what is in it, and show the older children where to find it. With a little care, it will quietly earn its place on every journey.
